After being swept in the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals by the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Canes are regrouped and ready to take on the new NHL season. The franchise extended the coaching staff's contracts to a multi-year one. The team also resigned a number of players to include Chris Terry, Jussi Jokinen, Erik Cole, Patrick Dwyer, Michael Ryan. The most notable signings were Cam Ward's 6-yr $37.8 million contract and Touomo Ruutu's 3-yr $11.4 million deal.
A number of Free Agents were also acquired, most notably Matthew Pistilli, Tom Kostopoulos and Andrew Alberts. The Hurricanes also picked up the following via trade; Aaron Ward, Rob Hennigar, Jiri Tlusty and Alexandre R. Picard.
The Hurricanes are currently situated in 14th place in the NHL Eastern Conference with at 24-30-7 record.
